Photos: Annual March – April 12th, 2014

On Saturday, April 12th, 2014, from 11AM-2PM, the Justice for Kenny Coalition held the Annual Anti-Police Brutality March & Kenny Lazo Vigil (marking the 6th anniversary of Kenny Lazo’s police murder) at the 3rd Precinct of the Suffolk Count Police Department in Bay Shore, New York. 70+ supporters came out to protest and demand justice for police brutality victims in Long Island and nationwide. Around 40 of the supporters came directly from New York City who traveled to Long Island on a bus that Justice for Kenny Coalition rented with the funds raised this year.

The event started off with protesting outside the 3rd precinct, and passing out informational flyers to cars. The informational flyers included information about Kenny’s case and the rampant police brutality in Long Island. Afterwards, the supporters marched down 5th Avenue, holding up white crosses representing Long Island Stolen Lives (killed by law enforcement) and protest signs, while handing out flyers to strip malls along the way. When the march was over, the group convened under the large 3rd Precinct sign where family members and supporters spoke. The event ended in its yearly ritual of carrying the crosses to the front door of the precinct, laying them down, and saying a group prayer for all those killed by police. Candles were lit for the victims and some had framed photographs to display with the crosses.

Supporting organizations for this year’s event include: Picture the Homeless, New York Civil Liberties Union, Justice Committee, Make the Road New York, October 22nd Coalition, ACD Media, Mala & Mental, Justice 4 Shantel, Parents Against Police Brutality & the Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation.
